Juan Manuel (“Juanpi”) Dolande has risen to prominence in Panama over the last few years thanks to his campaign to raise public awareness of the challenges faced by residents with special needs. He has attracted large audiences by inviting figures in the media, politics, and the arts to traverse parts of the Panamanian capital in a wheelchair. This popularity explains why his book Te cambio todos tus problemas por un día de mi vida (I’ll Take All of Your Problems If You’ll Live One Day of My Life) is well on its way to success in the Central American country. Beyond the motivational self-help narrative, this work gives us an intimate look at the daily struggles of a person dealing with disabilities. Reading Dolande’s story is an exercise in empathy that is much needed in our time.
