Costa Rica: Increases Food Exports

The Costa Rican food industry is looking to diversify and expand its client portfolio in the Middle and Far East. In the first quarter of this year, the country’s Foreign Trade Promotion Agency (PROCOMER) sent delegations to two important trade fairs in these markets: Gulfood Dubai (February 18 to 20) and Foodex Japan (March 5 to 8). Costa Rican hopes center on fruit (fresh, preserved, juiced, concentrate), cereals, nuts, chocolate, and coffee. Japan, for example, imports 44 billion dollars in food annually and just 5 million dollars of that comes from Costa Rica.  Dubai is a platform for re-export to North Africa and the Middle East, regions in which food consumption increased some 12% between 2017 and 2018.
